The Beer Game demonstrates some important insights about systems. It’s fun, surprising and deeply insightful. Would you like your team to play?
The Beer Game was developed by The System Dynamics Society to help people understand some fundamental principles of systems – structure, behaviour (outcomes), feedback, uncertainty, non-linearity…among others. Based on how inventory flows throughout a beer supply chain, the insights are equally applicable to non-business contexts.
Playing the beer game requires ideally 8 people. More can participate as observers and fewer than eight can work as well if need be. It takes three hours to introduce and play the game, then debrief.
At Ponder, we played The Beer Game at MIT, facilitated by System Dynamics Society staff. We use the equipment for the game from The System Dynamics Society.
